9H Research Foundation Awards $5,000 to Winning Senior Design Challenge Teams and Funds Prototypes for 31 Students
LARAMIE, Wyo., February 25, 2021–9H Research Foundation is sponsoring a $5,000 renewable energy design challenge for 31-students at the University of Wyoming. The winners of the competition were announced at the 9H Event hosted by President Seidel and Governor Gordon at the Gateway Center at The University of Wyoming. To drive student innovation, 9H is also funding 7 student engineering groups to design and build solar and energy storage projects. 9H Research Foundation has been working closely with UW’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, specifically Interim Dean Cam Wright, and Senior Design Professors Dr. David Bell, Dr. Jonathan Naughton, Dr. Jeff Anderson, and Victor Bershinsky.
The winning teams of the $5,000 Senior Design Challenge are:
“The 9H project represents an amazing opportunity for students and faculty from the University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science to be closely involved in a cutting edge large-scale renewable energy installation. UW CEAS graduate Gene Humphrey wants to give back to the University and wants to build this facility near campus with maximum participation of students and faculty. While a typical installation of this size would never have opportunities like this, 9H Research Foundation is willing to adjust the overall design, as it is developed and installed, to better facilitate research, student involvement, and general benefit to the UW and CEAS community. 9H Research Foundation is building a philanthropic Student Research Facility to Gift $10+ million in clean energy and in-kind support services to the University of Wyoming over the project lifetime (3MW Solar Facility). The Clean Energy Research Facility supports the creation of a world-class Renewable Energy Engineering Curriculum for the University. Providing hand-on research experiences, 9H is sponsoring 31 UW senior design students competing in a $5,000 renewable energy design challenge. To drive student innovation, 9H is also funding 7 student groups to design and build solar and energy storage projects, as well as hiring student interns. In line with the Governor’s WIN Initiative, 9H is presenting a Business Model for the state: attract industry by providing them with solar energy, abundant Wyoming natural gas, a skilled workforce, and state tax incentives.
